Vigil held for Martinsville man killed in July shooting

MARTINSVILLE, VA – There was a birthday celebration on Saturday night in Martinsville, but not like the ones you’re used to.

Over 50 of Nyjeon Dameae Brandon’s friends and loved ones gathered at People’s Cemetery, where his body was laid to rest.

Brandon died at the Martinsville hospital early July 9th after being dropped off by "private citizens," the police department reported.

Police said he was shot while he was a passenger in a vehicle that was traveling on Commonwealth Boulevard West around the area of Chopstix restaurant.

“I want whoever did this to know that I know exactly who you are,” his mother, Nicole Brandon, said. “I do not appreciate you hiding and running from what you have taken from me. It's not fair that everybody that loved Nyjeon and that was his true friend and his family are here tonight on his 21st birthday after y'all got the chance to celebrate y'all's 21st birthday. My son will never see his birthday again. I don't appreciate it at all and I hope each and every day when you blink, you see my son until you turn yourself in and rot in jail like you need to.”

No one has been arrested for the murder but police say the case continues to be active.

“We've executed several search warrants at several locations,” Martinsville Chief of Police Rob Fincher stated. “I can't go into details about those because they are sealed, but we are actively working on the case. We are awaiting some evidence results with the state lab and we're hoping to bring it to a resolution.”

Saturday would have been Brandon’s 21st birthday and attendees remembered him by sharing memories and celebrating his life.

The family shared that they want to continue to share his story to hopefully bring justice.

“If you know something, say something,” his grandmother Arnita Brandon said. “If you seen something, say something. We're not giving up.”

Anyone having information about Nyjeon Brandon’s murder is asked to contact Lieutenant Jim Lovell at 276-403-5301 or the Crime Stoppers line at 276-632-7463.
