PATRICK COUNTY, Va. – Three Cana, Virginia, residents are in custody following an investigation into a stolen ATV, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

The incident took place in Ararat, Virginia, and led to the recovery of a Yamaha ATV reported stolen from Carroll County.

On October 29, 2025, Senior Deputy Andrew Kinney and Deputy Joseph Fain received a tip regarding individuals in possession of a stolen ATV.

The deputies located and confronted Roger Hiatt (38), Brenda Hiatt (36), and Billy Roberts (31), all residents of 188 Carrollwood Mobile Home Park in Cana.

Upon investigation, the deputies confirmed the ATV was a Yamaha model that had been stolen a few days earlier from Carroll County.

As a result, all three individuals were arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Stolen Property.

In addition, Roger Hiatt and Billy Roberts were also charged with Grand Larceny based on warrants issued by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff expressed his appreciation for the tip that led to the arrest and recovery of the stolen property. "A tip received from a citizen, and later confirmed by a Carroll County Sheriff’s deputy, led us to recover the stolen property and solve this case," Sheriff Smith said in a Friday morning news release.

Details of the Arrests

  • Roger Hiatt is being held without bond.

  • Brenda Hiatt is being held on a $1,500 secured bond.

  • Billy Roberts is being held on a $4,000 secured bond.

Sheriff Smith emphasized the importance of community involvement and collaboration with neighboring law enforcement agencies in solving crimes.

"Relationships with our citizens and our law enforcement partners are critical in solving crime, and this is yet another example of how that model proves to be successful."

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate and urges anyone with additional information regarding the case to come forward.

The swift recovery of the stolen ATV and the arrests highlight the effectiveness of local law enforcement working in partnership with the community to address property crimes.
