DANVILLE – A Martinsville man who was attacked and dropped off at Sovah Health of Danville died Wednesday from his wounds.
Danville Police say they are now investigating the death of 72-year-old Melvin Smith as a homicide.
The suspect, 39-year-old Lindsey Antonio "Tony" Wilson, of Yanceyville, N.C. remains at large.
Police say they were called to the emergency room for the malicious wounding on July 4 at about 12:30 AM.
Smith was suffering from blunt force trauma and lacerations to his head and neck, according to Danville Police.
He was then transported to Duke Medical Center and listed in serious condition.
Authorities say the individuals who dropped off the victim left before officers arrived.
Investigators found the vehicle used in the 800 block of Betts Street.
They executed a search warrant and say the evidence indicated that the home is where Smith was attacked.
