Philpott Lake crests over dam's spillway for the first time

BASSETT, VA Since the opening of Philpott Dam in 1953, Philpott Lake is pouring over the spillway.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, there is no danger of dam failure.

The corps, who operate and maintain the spillway, said spill flow and controlled releases should not have any downstream impacts.

Operators do not expected another rise and the spill will slowly decrease as time goes on.

After the lake topped the crest elevation of the spillway at around 3 a.m. on Friday, the corps sent engineers to the dam for readings and real-time observations, as a precaution.
