PATRICK SPRINGS, Va. A Patrick Springs man has been arrested following an early-morning incident that prompted a tactical response from the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Dan Smith said.

Deputies arrested 34-year-old James Daniel Biggs of 2355 Dogwood Road and charged him with attempted murder of a law-enforcement officer, abduction, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, violation of a protective order, and reckless handling of a firearm, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The incident began at 4:04 a.m. Monday, when the Patrick County 911 Center received a report that a man armed with a gun was holding people against their will at the Dogwood Road residence.

When Senior Deputy Matt Hodges arrived on scene, a single shot was fired by a man standing outside the home, the release said.

Hodges exited his patrol vehicle with his issued patrol rifle, took cover, and was able to identify the shooter from approximately 60 yards away as James Biggs. A standoff followed while Biggs reportedly held the weapon at his side.

Members of the sheriff’s office tactical response team responded and entered negotiations with Biggs. After roughly 30 minutes of negotiations, Biggs was taken into custody.

He sustained minor injuries during the arrest, officials said.

The sheriff’s office said a firearm and suspected methamphetamine were recovered from the scene. Biggs is being held without bail at the Patrick County Jail.
