STUART, Va. – Patrick County is moving forward with a major change to its emergency medical services. At its August 25 meeting, the Patrick County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with Ambulance Services of Lexington, Inc. — doing business as Patrick County EMS — to assume management of the county’s paid EMS staff, known as Station 8, by the end of this year.

Under the agreement, all current Station 8 employees will be offered positions with Patrick County EMS, ensuring a smooth transition and uninterrupted emergency response coverage for residents.

County leaders stressed that the shift will not reduce support for Patrick County’s volunteer rescue squads and fire departments.

To further enhance coordination, the county will maintain an Emergency Management Coordinator, a role dedicated to:

  • Supporting county operations during natural disasters and large-scale emergencies

  • Serving as a liaison between volunteer agencies and the Board of Supervisors

  • Overseeing EMS and emergency-related grants

  • Providing training and operational support

Patrick County EMS has pledged a $2 million investment into local emergency services, which will fund new ambulances, advanced training opportunities, and other operational upgrades.

The organization, in partnership with Braden Health, will also manage its own direct billing, streamlining administrative processes.

Board Chair Jonathan Wood said the partnership represents a significant step forward for emergency care in Patrick County.
