PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY – Sunday evening at approximately 4:09 PM, the Pittsylvania County 911 Center received a call from 2521 Martin Drive in Pittsylvania County. The caller reported that a male subject had been shot. Deputies arrived and found a deceased male, who has been identified as 23-year-old Deon Jawan Peatross of First Street in Eden, North Carolina. The investigation shows that the death of Peatross is firearm related.
The subsequent investigation has led to the arrest of 27-year-old De’Von Dre’Col Smith of Amy Avenue in Martinsville. Smith is charged with one felony count of First-Degree Homicide and one felony count of Using a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
The deceased was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke where the official cause and manner of death will be determined.
Smith is being held in the Pittsylvania County Jail under no bond. Smith’s first appearance is scheduled to be Monday.
