The wait is over for students across Martinsville and Henry County as schools reopen today, marking the start of the new academic year.
As students fill classrooms with excitement and energy, local officials are urging everyone to prioritize safety and traffic awareness during this busy time.
With school buses back on the roads and parents dropping off children, traffic congestion is expected, especially around schools. Martinsville Police Chief Robert Fincher reminded drivers to exercise caution and patience.
“We’re asking all drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and follow school zone speed limits. School buses will be making frequent stops, and it’s crucial to obey the law by stopping when buses have their red lights flashing,” said Chief Fincher.
Additionally, crossing guards will be stationed near busy intersections to assist students. Drivers are urged to watch for children walking or biking to school and to always yield at crosswalks.
Parents are encouraged to review these essential safety tips with their children:
Walking to School: Always use sidewalks and crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing the street and stay alert to your surroundings.
Biking to School: Wear a properly fitted helmet and use reflective gear. Obey traffic rules and ride in designated bike lanes when available.
Bus Safety: Arrive at the bus stop early, stand back from the curb, and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before boarding.
Stranger Awareness: Avoid talking to strangers and report anything unusual to a trusted adult or school official.
Local law enforcement will increase patrols around school zones during the first weeks of school to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to assist in maintaining a safe environment.
Inside schools, teachers and staff are focusing on safety drills, including fire, severe weather, and lockdown procedures, to prepare students for emergencies.
Schools are also taking steps to promote hygiene, encouraging handwashing to reduce the spread of illness.
As the school year begins, Martinsville and Henry County leaders are calling on the community to work together for a smooth and safe transition.
Parents, students, and community members are encouraged to remain vigilant, patient, and proactive in promoting safety for all.
Welcome back, students! Let’s make this school year one to remember.
