PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — A 24-year-old man is in custody after a multi-agency manhunt that spanned across jurisdictions and prompted an emergency shelter-in-place order in Prince Edward County.

Authorities say Rayjaun Calloway was arrested Sunday afternoon after allegedly killing his father in Roanoke and later firing multiple shots at a police officer during a confrontation in Farmville.

The incident began Saturday, just before 5 p.m., when Roanoke Police responded to a shooting in the 900 block of 7th Street NW.

Upon arrival, officers discovered 55-year-old Israel Calloway, Rayjaun’s father, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Early Sunday, a Farmville Police officer spotted Rayjaun Calloway near Route 460 and Hixburg Road.

According to officials, Calloway opened fire on the officer and then fled on foot, prompting Prince Edward County authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for residents within a 5-mile radius of the area.

The Virginia State Police, along with local and regional law enforcement agencies, launched a coordinated search effort.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., Calloway was located and taken into custody without further incident near Sulphur Spring Road on Route 460. Authorities temporarily halted westbound traffic during the operation, which has since resumed normal flow.

No injuries to officers or civilians were reported during the search and apprehension.

Rayjaun Calloway is expected to face multiple charges related to the homicide and assault on law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
