Juvenile crashes into Martinsville police vehicle, officer injured

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A Sunday afternoon domestic disturbance call ended with a crash involving a Martinsville patrol vehicle and a juvenile facing a handful of charges.

Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher said while his officers were responding to Hundley Street for the domestic incident between a mother and son, the juvenile took the family's Nissan sedan and tried to leave.

The juvenile purposely hit the responding police vehicle head-on and the officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to Police Chief Fincher.

After the crash, the juvenile fled the scene and was captured by another officer after a brief struggle.

The Virginia State Police has been asked to assist in investigating the crash to provide an impartial review.

The juvenile has been charged with the following:

  • Attempted murder on a law enforcement officer

  • Felony hit and run

  • Reckless driving

  • No operator’s license

  • Providing false identification to avoid prosecution

  • Felony strangulation on a family member

  • Assault and battery on a family member

  • Larceny of a vehicle

  • Malicious wounding

He is currently being held in a juvenile detention center.

The Martinsville Commonwealth’s Attorney is seeking to adjudicate the juvenile so he can be tried as an adult, according to Fincher.
