Hard freeze expected, black ice a concern Monday night

HENRY COUNTY – VDOT and Martinsville City crews have cleared many roads, but BTW21 weatherman Dustin Staples says a hard freeze is expected tonight which will turn the snow into ice.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg said the following in a Facebook post Monday:

There's still some snow, but some has begun to melt. As temperatures fall below freezing, be alert for areas of black ice overnight through Tuesday morning commute as snowmelt freezes up. Black ice appears as otherwise innocuous damp pavement, but a thin layer of ice exists on top of the pavement. Untreated roads, bridges and shaded areas are all vulnerable.
