LYNCHBURG, VA (BTW21) — Severe flooding has led to the closure of several major roadways in Halifax County, prompting long-term detours that stretch into neighboring North Carolina.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has closed sections of Routes 58, 501, and 96 due to rising river levels and infrastructure damage.

This morning, the Hyco River overflowed its banks, inundating Route 501 (Huell Matthews Highway) near its intersection with Route 96 (Virgilina Road).

A separate section of Route 96 was also submerged nearby, making travel through the area hazardous and impassable.

In response, VDOT has issued a detour routing drivers east on Route 58 toward Sandy Fork, then south on Route 49 into North Carolina, reconnecting with Route 501 near Roxboro.

Further west, Route 58 between Route 119 (Calvary Road) and Route 699 (Wilkins Road) has been shut down due to a sinkhole caused by floodwaters.

The detour directs motorists south on Route 119 into North Carolina, then east on William Barker Road and Cunningham Road, rejoining Route 699 to return to Route 58.

“These closures will be in place for an extended period,” a VDOT spokesperson said. “Crews are monitoring the situation closely and will assess damage and plan repairs as soon as floodwaters recede.”

VDOT urges all drivers to use extreme caution and avoid driving through flooded areas. “Turn around, don’t drown,” officials stressed.

Updates on road conditions and reopening timelines will be provided as they become available.
