Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were critically wounded Wednesday afternoon after a gunman opened fire outside a Washington, D.C. Metro station just blocks from the White House, according to authorities.
The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. and was described by Metro Police as an ambush. Officials say both guardsmen suffered life-threatening injuries—at least one with a gunshot wound to the head—and were airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
“A suspect came around the corner, raised his arm with a firearm and discharged it at the National Guard members,” said Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll. “Other National Guard members in the area were able, after some back and forth, to subdue the individual.”
A witness reported seeing a chaotic scene unfold: “They had one person pinned down and yelling at him to stay down. And then there were two National Guards on the ground. One, it looked like they were trying to resuscitate.”
Authorities have identified the suspected gunman as a 29-year-old man who moved to the U.S. from Afghanistan in August 2021. Investigators emphasized that the probe is in its early stages, and a motive has not been determined.
“There are a lot of agents here from various federal and law enforcement agencies,” Carroll said. “We’re looking at all aspects, but we don’t have a motive.”
FBI Director Kash Patel said federal resources have been fully deployed to support the investigation.
“We have assembled the full force of federal, state, and local law enforcement to make sure those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” Patel said.
