HENRY COUNTY, VA – A Henry County Commissioner of the Revenue candidate has revised an ad after an opponent filed a complaint.
Andrea Gaines, External Affairs Manager of the Virginia Department of Elections, confirmed to BTW21 News that a formal complaint was filed October 30 against Adrienne Bowyer by one of her opponents Melissa Zehr.
Bowyer, Zehr, Tiffany Hairston, Blake Minter and Dallas Hairston are vying for the commissioner post in the November 7 election.
The complaint stated that, “The final part of Mrs. Bowyer's online and televised commercial does not meet the Virginia Code § 24.2-957.1.”
“Every candidate, starting a race, must adhere to the laws and rules associated with a clean campaign,” Zehr wrote in an email Friday afternoon. “This is laid out explicitly in the Virginia Code for all election & campaign interactions, including advertisements. It is concerning when any candidate fails to read, and follow the laws set forth by the state of Virginia in regards to their campaign. That is the basis for this complaint, nothing more.”
In a Friday night email, Bowyer said the ad had been corrected and that it would replace the existing ad.
“This complaint was filed by an opposing candidate over a five second portion of a forty three second commercial which should have been accompanied by an image of me, the candidate,” Bowyer wrote. “The omission of my image was a simple oversight. This is a non-issue and, obviously, a feeble attempt to smear our campaign.”
