Cell Phone-Free Classrooms in 2025?

Governor Glenn Youngkin

Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia issued Executive Order 33, aiming to create cell phone-free environments in K-12 public schools across the state.

This initiative follows growing concerns about how excessive cell phone and social media use impacts students' mental health and education.

The order directs the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to work with parents, students, teachers, and school leaders to develop guidelines.

These guidelines will set age-appropriate limits on when students can use cell phones during school hours, allowing for emergencies.

Governor Youngkin emphasized the need for healthier, more focused learning environments.

Studies show that prolonged social media use contributes to higher rates of depression and anxiety among young people.

In response, the VDOE and the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services will allocate $500,000 to help schools implement these new policies.

Under the executive order, the VDOE will draft initial guidelines by August 15, with final policies expected by January 1, 2025.

Public feedback will be gathered over the next six weeks to shape these guidelines, ensuring they reflect community needs and best practices.

While some school districts in Virginia already limit cell phone use, this statewide effort aims to improve educational outcomes by reducing distractions and promoting healthier student interactions.

Governor Youngkin and state officials hope these measures will support students' academic success and well-being.
