Bassett man strikes patrol car, injures two deputies during chase

BASSETT – Sunday at approximately 10:37 AM deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office were investigating a threatening to burn property case at 1088 Jarrett Drive in Bassett.


Through the course of the investigation, Charles Jonathan Belcher was developed as a suspect.


At 10:55 AM, deputies located Charles Belcher at 1121 Jarrett Drive.


Belcher was sitting in a vehicle in the driveway at the residence.


A brief conversation ensued between the deputies and Belcher at which time deputies told Belcher to exit the vehicle that he was being placed under arrest for threatening to burn property.


Belcher refuse to exit the vehicle, he then put the vehicle in drive and rapidly accelerated.


While fleeing the scene Belcher struck a patrol vehicle and two deputies.


Deputies pursued the vehicle for one half of a mile on Jarrett Drive, the vehicle driven by Charles Belcher lost control and struck an embankment.


Belcher was taken into custody without further incident.


Belcher was transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville where he was treated and released.


Both deputies received minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.


Charles Jonathan Belcher, 33, of 1163 Jarrett Drive, Bassett VA was charged with the following:

  • Felony Assault on Law Enforcement (2 counts)

  • Felony Destruction of Property

  • Felony Elude Law Enforcement

  • Felony Threatening to Burn Property

  • Hit & Run (misdemeanor)

  • Obstruction of Justice (misdemeanor)

Charles Jonathan Belcher is currently held in the Henry County Jail without bond.
