HENRY COUNTY – Henry County authorities say despite social media rumors, no abductions or attempted abductions have taken place.
On Friday, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office says they received a report that a subject was watching two teenage girls and communicating with someone via a walkie talkie.
This allegedly occurred in the parking lot of a business on Greensboro Road in Ridgeway.
Through the course of an investigation, authorities say the subject in question was located and he came forward to speak with investigators.
It was discovered that he was in the area shopping and was not a threat to anyone.
The individual’s story was corroborated through video surveillance, according to the sheriff's office.
Investigators say the individual in question was using his cell phone and is a known acquaintance of one of the teenage girls and her parents.
The sheriff’s office says inaccurate information regarding this incident, along with talk about subjects abducting girls from the area circulated on social media.
"We understand the urgency in wanting to share something you consider an emergency or public safety issue, however; we encourage you to call 9-1-1 immediately before taking the time to post on social media," the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
In addition, they ask that you verify the validity of the report before sharing it on social media.
"Sharing information that has not been vetted as to its validity can create numerous problems and panic within the community," the sheriff’s office added.
The sheriff’s office has added additional patrols to the shopping and commercial areas, as an added precaution during the busy holiday season.
