RICHMOND, VA
Virginia State Troopers, along with partners from the South Hill Police Department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Greensville County Sheriff’s Office, the town of Lawrenceville Police Department and the Emporia Police Department, cited 96 drivers for speeding during the recent traffic safety enforcement effort on U.S. Route 58. The “Southern Virginia US58 Safety Initiative” took place from May 13, 2024, to May 17, 2024, along 116 miles of Virginia’s southernmost east-west corridor from Emporia to Danville.
“Anecdotally, we’ve seen increased traffic on Route 58, as people use it as an alternative to get across the Commonwealth,” said 1/Sgt. S.C. Leslie, Virginia State Police Area 22 Commander. “To have cited almost 100 drivers for speeding highlights the need for this type of traffic safety enforcement.
There were 441 individuals killed in speed-related crashes in Virginia in 2022, with 81.9% of them occurring in traffic crashes on non-interstate highways.
More than 13,000 drivers, passengers, and pedestrians were injured in 2022 on Virginia's highways due to speeding.
Drivers complying with the posted speed limits is how we make Route 58 safer for our residents accessing Route 58 via driveways, parking lots, and intersections."
In addition, law enforcement along the targeted stretch of Route 58 also cited 12 people for seatbelt violations and one child restraint violation. There was also one Driving While Intoxicated (DUI) arrest.
