On September 21, 2024, at approximately 2:11 PM, a deputy from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office observed a white Buick involved in a recent larceny at a local business.
Upon running the vehicle's tag, the deputy discovered that the information did not match.
The deputy initiated a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated and drove recklessly down Greensboro Rd.
The pursuit continued at high speeds, turning left onto Main St. and eventually onto Hwy. 87 toward North Carolina.
Near the intersection of Vista View Ln. and Hwy. 87, a deputy executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T. maneuver), causing the suspect vehicle to slide into an embankment.
As the deputy approached, the suspect vehicle unexpectedly rolled forward, pinning the deputy's leg between the suspect vehicle and the patrol car. The driver fled on foot.
Inside the suspect vehicle were two individuals: Ronald Haizlip, who had an outstanding warrant for eluding police from Eden, NC, and a female passenger who was released without charges.
Haizlip was arrested and is currently held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center, awaiting extradition.
The injured deputy was transported to SOVA Health of Martinsville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover.
The fleeing suspect was identified as Carlton Lewis Haizlip, 35, of Eden, NC. While fleeing, he also stole a 2006 Saturn from a nearby residence in Ridgeway, VA.
Ongoing investigative efforts led deputies to discover Carlton Haizlip's location in Myrtle Beach, where he was arrested by the Myrtle Beach Police Department without incident.
The stolen Saturn was also recovered.
Charges against Carlton Haizlip include:
Felony Eluding Police (Virginia Code §46.2-817)
Assault on Law Enforcement (Virginia Code §18.2-57)
Larceny of Motor Vehicle (Virginia Code §18.2-95)
