DEPUTIES HONORED WITH LIFE SAVING AWARD

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Two Rockingham County sheriff’s deputies have received Lifesaving Awards for their heroic response to a river emergency involving a 6-year-old child.
Sheriff Sam Page and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office recognized Deputies J. McCollum and Z. Warner for their actions on July 19, 2026, near 180 M&M Lane in Madison.
The deputies responded to a report of a child in distress on the river. After arriving, they quickly navigated difficult terrain, used throw ropes and helped multiple people reach safety from a steep embankment.
The 6-year-old was unconscious during the rescue and required immediate medical attention. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the child is expected to make a full recovery.
The agency credited McCollum and Warner’s quick decision-making, teamwork and commitment to public safety with helping change the outcome of the emergency.
The Sheriff’s Office also thanked the other agencies that assisted with the coordinated rescue response.
