Registration session set for high school students’ Summer Discover Institute

MARTINSVILLE – The Summer Discovery Institute hosted by MHC After 3, Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math & Science is returning this summer.

The camp simulates a college-going experience for rising 9th through 12th graders with fun and interactive courses.

As an intensive college and career readiness camp, the institute is designed to increase high school success and college admission rates.

A registration and information session for the Summer Discovery Institute will be held at Patrick Henry Community College for interested students and their parents on Saturday, May 18.

Those interested are invited to drop in any time between from 9AM to 11AM in PHCC’s Frith Exhibit Hall. Parents or guardians should attend the registration and information session with their student. The

Summer Discover Institute which runs from 8:50AM to 3PM daily will take place from June 17 through July 19 with an orientation on June 13.

Registration for the summer camp is free, however, space is limited.

“At the information session, each student registers for a series of interactive classes to meet his or her interests, to build skills, and academic prowess in a college environment,” says Shanna Francisco-King, Project Director of MHC After 3, Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math and Science. “Parents and guardians have the opportunity to be part of that process and to hear first-hand from our staff and instructors the benefits of participating in summer programs.”

The courses students can choose from include: BioMed, Forensic Science, Dance, Step, SAT Prep, Spoken Word and Creative Writing, Photography, Criminal Justice, Geometry, Weightlifting, Drama, Fashion Design, Medical Careers, Debate, Graphic Design, Basketball, College Admissions 101, and more.

Students who are regular participants and demonstrate good citizenship are eligible for summer college campus visits and cultural enrichment trips at no cost to families.

These trips will take place during the last two weeks of July.

Transportation to and from camp will be provided throughout the city and county.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily to students.

“To prepare teens to succeed in college and career, we’re offering them access to fantastic leadership activities, academic enrichment, community projects, and college readiness. The Summer Discovery Institute engages students in interest-based courses designed to mimic a college-going experience,” says to Director Francisco-King.”

The Summer Discovery Institute is a partnership between PHCC outreach programs: Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, and MHC After 3.

Additional information for course registrations must be obtained by attending an information session.
