White House Ban against News Outlets Leads to Lawsuit.
President Donald Trump banned press in the White House after claims of them reporting lies against the president. The three news organizations band together in a lawsuit against the President.
CNN, MS Now, and Politico were officially banned from the White house on Sept. 18 with their credentials being taken the next day on Sept. 19 and being turned away by members of the Secret Service.
Due to this action on behalf of the White House, the three news outlets are banning together in order to sue the president personally on the belief that he violated first amendment rights by barring them access to the whitehouse grounds, and not allowing them to get coverage of his actions.
An article by CNN published Sept. 21, called, “CNN, MS NOW and Politico sue Trump administration over White House access” by Katelyn Polantz, Brian Stelter, and Tierney Sneed states:
“The three national news outlets President Donald Trump banned from the White House — CNN, MS NOW, and Politico — filed a critical First Amendment lawsuit to restore their access. The emergency request is set to go before a federal judge in the DC District Court and could result in hearings and legal arguments from the administration as soon as this week.”
Trump on the other hand is claiming that the actual banning of these news outlets is justified. According to an article from The New York Times posted Sept. 23, by Erik Wemple titled “White House Says Access Is a ‘Privilege’ in Court Filing Defending Media Ban.”
“The alleged violations, said the filing, include ‘trafficking in verifiable falsehoods about national security and other issues, and publishing sensitive or classified information.’”
Then the article continues with a quote from the filing:
“‘Access to the White House is a privilege — not a right,’ reads the filing, which argues that Mr. Trump’s action against the three news outlets does not violate the First Amendment and aligns with a long history of presidents favoring some journalists over others.”
Due to the ban and lawsuit, there are also media organizations that are taking a stand against the White House in solidarity with CNN, MS Now, and Politico. It is outlined in an article from Yahoo! News published Sept. 23 by Dylan Stableford and Mike Bebernes titled “Trump TV launches after White House bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico and major networks halt video coverage in protest."
“In response to the ban, four major TV networks — ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News — refused to participate in the White House pool, the rotating group of reporters, photographers and videographers that document the president's public events. CNN had been scheduled to serve as the television pool on Monday.”
Although the lawsuit is still ongoing Trump has decided to release a new addition to the White House website as a response to the ban, leading people to a 24/7 Youtube Livestream called “TRUMPTV: The Essential Station.”
With multiple major news studios boycotting the actual live filming of White House Press Conferences and announcements, this is their primary way of combating this, with it being a 24/7 live stream hosted by the White House, it will make it more consolidated to watch the information go by.
The trial is still in the early stages with more information to come out as it goes along, we will have to wait and see how this issue turns out.
