Vehicle struck by train, plunges into creek in Bassett

BASSETT, VA – A Norfolk Southern train crashed into a car on the tracks near the 1400 block of Philpott Drive, pushing it into the Town Creek in Bassett.

“It appears that the female ran off the left side of the roadway, became disabled and hang up on the tracks. The train at which time continued on, pushing the vehicle into the creek,” State Police Trooper M.L. Gravely told BTW21 News.

The collision occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday.

“The female exited the vehicle therefore, there were no injuries to be noted in the crash,” Gravely stated.

The road was closed for several hours due to the train being stalled across the road.

The driver of the silver in color Nissan “will be charged with failure to stay right of center,” Trooper Gravely said.

Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office assisted on scene.
