FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA – One person is dead after a car crashed into a dump truck in Franklin County.

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. Monday on Route 220 at the Route 40 interchange.

Virginia State Police says one of their troopers recorded on radar a Chevrolet Impala going north on Route 220 at 81 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone.

When the trooper initiated a traffic stop, the Chevrolet took the exit for Route 40, made a u-turn on Muse Field Road, took the ramp to Route 220 north and collided with a dump truck.

State police say the impact of the collision caused both vehicles to go through the median and come to rest in the southbound lanes of the highway.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 18-year-old Jesse Chance, of Rocky Mount, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene, according to police.

The dump truck driver was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
