ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NC – A tractor-trailer driver was cited after hitting a bridge and shutting down both directions of Highway 220 in Madison, NC on Wednesday morning.
At 9:47 a.m., a 1997 Kenworth tractor-trailer, driven by Thomas Helms Jr., of Buchanan, VA, traveling north on U.S. 220 struck the bridge at River Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Helms was charged with an over-height and permit violation, troopers said.
Highway Patrol said a 2010 GMC Terrain. driven by Luis Alberto Hernandez, of Madison, NC, then crashed into the beam that had fallen from the bridge.
Hernandez was taken to Cone Health Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville, NC for minor injuries.
The southbound lanes have been reopened while the northbound lanes remain closed as of 2 p.m.
A detour diverting traffic is in place.
