NELSON COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — Two parents were arrested on May 20, 2025, in connection with the death of their six-week-old infant last year, the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
On December 10, 2024, deputies and EMS personnel responded to a home on Taylor Creek Road in Afton for reports of an unresponsive infant.
Emergency medical technicians administered CPR at the scene before transporting the child to UVA Medical Center for further treatment.
Despite efforts to save the infant, the child was pronounced dead at the hospital four days later, on December 14.
According to the sheriff’s office, an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond was completed in March 2025.
Following a review of the autopsy and medical records by UVA medical experts, authorities concluded that the infant’s injuries were consistent with child abuse.
Based on these findings, arrest warrants were obtained for the child’s parents, identified as Ethan Garfield and Autumn Woods.
Both were taken into custody and charged with felony child abuse/neglect and felony homicide.
They are being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
The investigation is ongoing.
