Suspect in Henry County murder dies after being hospitalized



HENRY COUNTY, VA – On October 14, 2020, at approximately 5:45 pm, an inmate of the Henry County Jail notified deputies that she had taken an excessive amount of prescription blood pressure medication.  Deputies requested EMS to check her condition.  The Henry County Department of Public Safety responded to the jail and based on their evaluation deputies subsequently transported the inmate to SOVAH Health Martinsville at 6:50 pm.  Upon leaving the Henry County Jail and arriving at SOVAH Health the inmate was alert, coherent, and not displaying any signs of medical distress.

On October 15, 2020, at approximately 2:30 am Tanna Shelton Fitzgerald, 54, of Fieldale, VA died at SOVAH Health Martinsville.  An autopsy was performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia on October 15, 2020.  The preliminary results from that autopsy showed no obvious signs of trauma or foul play.  The complete autopsy report will be pending toxicology testing.

Fitzgerald was jailed on May 20, 2020, for three felony charges in relation to the murder of Pamela Morse.  She was held in the Henry County Jail without bond. 

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division responded and conducted an investigation.  Also, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, according to Virginia Department of Corrections guidelines reported this death to the VDOC.  The Virginia Department of Corrections will conduct an investigation and review of the death.
