Suspect in Fatal I-85 Shooting in Custody, Virginia State Police Say

Mecklenburg County, Va. (BTW21) — A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting along Interstate 85 in late August is now in custody, according to the Virginia State Police.
On August 28, troopers responded to reports of a shooting on I-85 northbound near the five-mile marker in Mecklenburg County. Upon arrival, authorities found a Honda Civic that had veered off the road and crashed into a culvert.
The vehicle’s driver, 20-year-old Hunter A. Bates of Colonial Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger was transported to a nearby hospital and has since been released.
Investigators quickly identified Jason Allen Glidewell, II as a suspect in the case and launched a search for him.
On Wednesday evening, around 6:02 p.m., a senior special agent with the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office was contacted by an acquaintance of Glidewell, who reported that the suspect wanted to surrender and was at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta.
With assistance from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Alberta Police Department, and VSP Area 22 troopers, Glidewell was taken into custody without incident.
He is currently being held at the Meherrin River Regional Jail without bond and faces charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony related to the fatal shooting.
In addition, VSP confirmed Glidewell has unrelated outstanding misdemeanor charges from Nottoway County.
Authorities also located the vehicle Glidewell was believed to be driving at the time of the incident on Tuesday.
Glidewell is scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg County General District Court on Thursday morning.
The investigation remains ongoing.
