ARARAT, Va. A man is in custody following a Monday morning shooting and standoff in Patrick County, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.

Around 8 a.m., deputies responded to a home at 3609 Willis Gap Road in Ararat after receiving a report of a male assaulting his elderly father.

Senior Deputy Matt Hodges and Deputy Cameron Adkins were the first to arrive.

An elderly woman answered the door, and as deputies made contact, a male subject approached from behind and swung a baseball bat at her.

Deputies quickly pulled the woman to safety as the suspect retreated into the home and barricaded himself inside.

Smith said a standoff followed, with additional Patrick County deputies and members of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responding to assist.

Deputies attempted to call the suspect out, but at one point he appeared at a front window, partially concealed, brandished a handgun, and fired shots toward law enforcement. Deputies returned fire.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was the only person remaining inside the residence at the time of the exchange. He was taken into custody about twenty minutes later.

“No deputies were injured, and the suspect sustained only minor injuries,” Smith reported. The elderly father had already fled the home before deputies arrived, seeking shelter at a neighbor’s house.

“As with all deputy-involved shootings, I have requested that this investigation be handled by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations,” Smith said in a Monday afternoon news release.

He added that all further inquiries would be referred to state police.

Smith confirmed that multiple charges are pending against the suspect.
