BASSETT – A son rescued his elderly parents from a house fire in Bassett on Wednesday.
Crews were called to the 1800 block of Sunset Drive at around 1:34 PM for the fire.
Bassett Volunteer Fire Department Chief Junior Lynch said Richard Woods pulled his parents James and Mary Inez Woods out of the residence.
While doing so, the son got first-degree burns to his face.
Lynch added that two pets did not make it out.
According to the couple, they started the wood stove before the fire started.
Volunteer firefighters from fire departments in Bassett, Collinsville and Fieldale battled the blaze.
The sheriff’s office, public safety, the public service authority, Bassett Rescue Squad and Appalachian Power also responded to the scene.
Crews are still working to determine the cause of the house fire, which was a total loss.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
