Richmond, Va. (BTW21) — The Virginia State Police (VSP) are urging all Virginians to buckle up following a deadly Labor Day weekend that saw six lives lost in six separate crashes across the Commonwealth.
Preliminary data shows that at least three of the victims were not wearing seat belts, and in a fourth case, it could not be determined if the individual was restrained.
Two of the fatalities involved motorcyclists, and the crashes occurred in Alexandria, Chesapeake (2), Lynchburg, Norfolk, and Frederick County.
The grim holiday weekend marks a notable increase in fatalities compared to last year, when 10 people lost their lives in crashes over the 2024 Labor Day weekend, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
In response, state officials are reminding drivers and passengers of a new Virginia seat belt law that took effect July 1, 2025, requiring all vehicle occupants—regardless of age or seating position—to wear a seat belt.
Previously, only front-seat passengers and those under 18 were required to buckle up.
As part of Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort)—a nationwide, state-led enforcement initiative—Virginia State Police deployed all available troopers and supervisors during the busy travel days of August 29 and September
During the official statistical counting period, VSP reported:
3,018 citations for speeding
1,370 for reckless driving
62 individuals charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
499 seat belt violations
116 child restraint violations
767 total crashes worked by troopers
Data continues to show that seat belts are one of the most effective tools in preventing serious injury or death during vehicle crashes.
With the new law now in effect, law enforcement has the authority to stop and cite anyone not properly restrained.
The Virginia State Police also noted that funds generated from traffic summonses are directed to the state’s Literary Fund, which supports public school construction, classroom technology, and teacher retirement benefits.
