TAD Tavern hosts anniversary event highlighting two decades of partnership, innovation, and economic growth across Southern Virginia
MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Chris Stockton of BTW21 had the opportunity to attend the 20th Anniversary Celebration of LOCUS, Community Focused Capital, held at TAD Tavern.
The evening recognized two decades of investment, collaboration, and regional transformation while bringing together leaders from economic development, philanthropy, housing, workforce development, and finance.
The event opened with remarks from Natalie Hodge-Davis, who welcomed guests and reflected on LOCUS' mission of creating opportunities through access to capital and community partnerships.
Throughout the evening, speakers emphasized how collaboration between foundations, financial institutions, local governments, and community organizations has reshaped Southern Virginia.
Telly Tucker, from the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR)Â discussed the continuing growth of the Blue Ridge Innovation Corridor (BRIC), describing the region as one of Virginia's emerging economic engines.
The presentation focused on regional cooperation, workforce development, artificial intelligence, and long-term planning that continues to attract new employers and investment.
Several panel discussions highlighted the importance of partnerships across multiple sectors.
Clarke Casteel of the Danville Regional Foundation and DeWitt House of The Harvest Foundation discussed philanthropy's role in supporting education, housing, workforce initiatives, entrepreneurship, and community revitalization.
Panelists noted that transformational projects succeed when public, private, and nonprofit organizations invest together with a shared vision.
Another discussion focused on entrepreneurship, featuring Da’Shanna Carr from the Community Investment Collaborative and Lauren Mathena with RISE Collaborative, who spoke about helping entrepreneurs gain access to coaching, capital, and business resources.
Housing emerged as one of the evening's most important topics. Sean Campbell from the West Piedmont Planning District Commission and Natalie Davis returned to the stage representing  LOCUS and discussed the growing need for affordable and workforce housing throughout Southern Virginia. As thousands of new jobs continue to be announced across the region, panelists stressed that expanding housing inventory will be critical to sustaining future economic growth.
The evening concluded with a discussion on capital and investment led by Pravina Raghavan, President and CEO of LOCUS, alongside Bill Shelton, Chair of the LOCUS Board of Directors. They emphasized that economic development extends well beyond groundbreaking ceremonies. Continued investment, flexible financing, and regional partnerships remain essential for maintaining momentum.
Speakers reflected on several successful redevelopment projects made possible through collaborative financing, including:
Redevelopment of historic downtown buildings into mixed-income housing.
The transformation of the former Dan River Falls complex into a mixed-use destination.
Development of Hyatt Studios in downtown Danville.
Revitalization efforts throughout Danville, South Boston, and neighboring communities.
One consistent message resonated throughout the evening: regional success depends on working together rather than competing against one another.
Among the memorable quotes shared during the program were:
"All ships rise with the tide."
and
"Economic development doesn't stop when the announcement is made. In fact, it just begins."
Guests also learned about upcoming initiatives, including the Regional Housing Summit scheduled for October 8, which will focus on forecasting future housing demand and developing collaborative solutions across Southern Virginia.
Following the presentations, attendees enjoyed dinner and networking while celebrating the accomplishments of LOCUS over the past 20 years and discussing opportunities for the future.
As Southern Virginia continues to experience significant economic growth through projects across the BRIC region, the anniversary served as a reminder that long-term success is built through partnerships, investment, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving communities for future generations.
