SALEM, Va. — A shooting on Interstate 81 prompted a significant law enforcement response Thursday morning, with the Virginia State Police shutting down a portion of the highway while investigating the incident.
At approximately 10:19 a.m., police received reports of a shooting between the scales and exit 150 on the northbound side of the interstate.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. Fortunately, their injuries are not expected to be fatal.
In response to the shooting, the Virginia State Police closed the northbound lanes of I-81 at exit 146 to conduct a thorough search for evidence.
The closure, which began at 12:00 p.m., lasted approximately an hour, with the lanes reopening at 1:07 p.m.
The Virginia State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, is leading the investigation and will be interviewing the victim as part of their efforts to piece together what happened.
However, as of now, no suspects have been identified, and authorities have not disclosed any details about what may have led up to the shooting.
The incident remains under active investigation, and the Virginia State Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Those with tips or relevant details are encouraged to contact the State Police at #77 or 1-800-542-5959.
A correction to a previous communication: the incident occurred at 10:19 a.m., not 10:19 p.m. as initially reported.
The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
