Body of missing 61-year-old jogger found

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

The body of a missing jogger was located shortly after 12 PM on Monday, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith. Sheriff's deputies and Primland employees located the body of Bruce Rubin, 61, off a bluff in the Roaring Creek Gorge. Smith stated the location where Rubin was found was not near a marked trail. Deputies, search and rescue personnel and rappel teams with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management were able to recover the body from the gorge by 8 PM. The body was transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke.

Specialized ropes teams are continuing the search for Bruce Rubin, 61, who was last seen jogging on a trail at Primland Resort in Vesta, according to an update from Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Smith said the search has been reduced from approximately 150 people down to 20, and emphasized that many areas have covered multiple times since Friday.

"We are using specialized rope units to cover areas that can't be covered on foot," he said.

The forecasted rains will temporarily suspended the search, as wet conditions will make it too dangerous for searchers.

"We are not giving up on Bruce, we owe it to his family to continue, and we will," the sheriff said.

Once weather conditions improve, specialized teams will resume the search.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator Oscar Tejeda or Lieutenant Steve Austin at 276 694 3161.
