Strayer Named Acting Superintendent for Henry County Public Schools

HENRY COUNTY – The School Board of Henry County has named Mrs. Sandy Strayer as the acting Superintendent of Henry County Public Schools, effective July 16. Strayer, the division’s Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Administration, will replace Dr. Jared Cotton who was recently named Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve our students and staff in this capacity. I look forward to collaborating with the school community as we work together to provide our diverse community of learners with meaningful educational experiences that prepare them for a successful future,” said Strayer, adding, “as we transition to a new strategic plan, we will continue to focus on our top priority - supporting each of our students as they work to accomplish their goals.”
A graduate of Drewry Mason High School, Strayer joined HCPS in 1992 as a teacher at Bassett High School and remained there until 2001. She served as assistant principal at Fieldale-Collinsville High School from 2001-2004 and was assistant principal at Bassett High School during the 2004-2005 school year.
In 2005, she became principal at Collinsville Primary School and remained there until 2010, when she became director of secondary instruction and career and technical education, a position she held for three years before moving into the role ofdirector of K-12 instruction. In 2014, she was named Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.
“Mrs. Strayer has tirelessly dedicated her career to ensuring equitable opportunities for students in our community,” said Dr. Joe DeVault, School Board Chairman. “She has an incomparable passion for the children of Henry County and has played a critical role in the growth and progress of our school division over the course of the last several years. Our board is confident that she will ensure that all students continue to grow and succeed,” DeVault said.
Strayer has an education specialist degree in administration from the University of Virginia; a master’s degree in professional studies from George Mason University; and a bachelor’s degree from Radford University. She has a division superintendent license from the Virginia Department of Education as well as a postgraduate professional license in administration and supervision PreK-12, theater arts PreK-12, and history and social sciences.
