Rockingham County Man Dies After Falling Into Fire Pit at Home

STONEVILLE, N.C. — A 47-year-old man tragically died early Saturday after falling into an active fire pit at his home in Rockingham County.
Deputies from the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office responded to a call reporting a death at 12:11 a.m. on November 29. The incident occurred at a residence in the 300 block of Brushy Mountain Road in Stoneville.
When authorities arrived on scene, they discovered Kenneth "Kenny" Dean Dalton in the backyard of the home.
First responders found him with severe burns across his body. Fire personnel, EMS crews, and investigators from the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office were quickly dispatched to assist.
An initial investigation revealed that Dalton had fallen into the fire pit, resulting in his fatal injuries.
The Rockingham County Medical Examiner responded to the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
While authorities have stated they do not suspect foul play at this time, they have kept the case open pending the results of an autopsy due to the severity of the injuries.
The Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and is assisting with the investigation.
As of now, authorities continue to seek further details regarding the circumstances leading up to Dalton’s tragic accident.
