Carter Bank is mourning the loss of Richard Owen, the Executive Vice President of Mortgage Banking and Corporate Sales Director, who passed away unexpectedly on January 25, 2025, just one day before his 55th birthday.
A Roanoke native, Owen was a key figure in the growth and success of Carter Bank, joining the institution in 2017.
Throughout his tenure, Owen was a driving force behind the bank's expansion, particularly in the areas of mortgage banking and corporate sales.
Under his leadership, the bank’s mortgage division saw significant growth, with the mortgage portfolio reaching nearly $650 million.
Owen was also instrumental in the establishment of the Corporate Sales Team, which streamlined sales strategies across all business lines, enhancing the customer experience.
Carter Bank CEO Litz Van Dyke expressed deep sorrow, remembering Owen not only as a colleague but as a longtime friend. “Richard played a very important role in making Carter Bank the company it is today. I’m proud to say Richard was more than just a colleague to me; he was my friend for over thirty years. I will hold on to the many fond memories of our time working and laughing together.
His spirit and legacy will forever remain in our hearts,” Van Dyke said.
Brad Langs, President of Carter Bank, shared his own tribute, reflecting on Owen's extraordinary impact. “Richard was a special person that we will miss dearly. Not only was he successful at work, he was successful in life and positively touched so many people on his journey. He was passionate about everything he did and truly lived life to the fullest!”
Owen was widely admired for his ability to connect with people. Known as a storyteller, mentor, and friend, he was dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships with customers and colleagues alike.
He was deeply committed to Carter Bank’s values, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for others to prosper.
Owen leaves behind two daughters, Kate and Laney, his parents, Clark Owen Jr. and Emilie Owen, his partner Elza, and her daughter, Esmeralda.
A memorial service for Owen will be scheduled at a later date, as family, friends, and colleagues gather to celebrate the life and legacy of a man who made a lasting impact on all who knew him.
