Roanoke, VA – A wanted subject was fatally shot by police officers following a tense standoff in the 700 block of Harrison Avenue on Thursday afternoon.

The incident unfolded after a failed attempt by the U.S. Marshal's Task Force to apprehend the suspect on Hershberger Road.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., law enforcement officers attempted to stop 28-year-old Markieth O. Bryson Jr., of Roanoke, who was wanted by authorities.

During the attempt, Bryson reportedly struck several police vehicles before fleeing the scene in his vehicle.

Following the collision, the suspect managed to evade capture, leading police on a search for his whereabouts.

Authorities located Bryson at a residence in the 700 block of Harrison Avenue. After surrounding the home, officers engaged in hours of negotiations with the suspect in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation.

However, when negotiations failed to result in a surrender, the Virginia State Police Tactical Team was called to make entry into the home.

Upon entering the residence, officers encountered Bryson, who allegedly produced a weapon.

In response to the threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking Bryson. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, Bryson was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during the incident, and there is currently no indication of any injuries to civilians in the area.

The Virginia State Police (VSP) Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

As per VSP protocol, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be handed over to the City of Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for review.

As of now, the exact nature of the weapon Bryson allegedly produced during the confrontation has not been disclosed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are urging anyone with further information related to this incident to contact the Virginia State Police.
