MARTINSVILLE, Va. (BTW21)– Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC) has secured renewed federal funding for its Student Support Services (SSS) program, the college announced this week.

P&HCC is among 950 institutions nationwide to receive a Non-Competing Continuation (NCC) award from the U.S. Department of Education’s FY 2025 SSS Program. The award totals $1,952,105 and will extend funding for the college’s existing SSS project for an additional five years, contingent on continued progress and compliance with program requirements.

“Patrick & Henry is honored to receive this stellar news,” said P&HCC President Dr. Greg Hodges. “Our staff strives to support the needs of our students in every way that we possibly can so that they can accomplish their dreams and build a financially stable future for themselves and their families.

Funding like this helps us to execute that support in ways that we might not be able to accomplish otherwise.”

The SSS program at P&HCC is part of the federally funded TRIO initiatives, which are designed to help students succeed academically and personally.

Services include academic advising, tutoring, counseling, and career guidance, as well as specialized support for veterans and students with disabilities.

“P&HCC is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where all students can thrive,” said Patsy Anderson-Rusmisel, director of SSS at P&HCC.

“I am so proud of our successful completion of the program’s objectives and the support we provide to students.”

The program primarily serves first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with documented disabilities. Participants may access supplemental scholarships, financial literacy and budgeting assistance, career and transfer advising, and opportunities to attend cultural, historic, and educational events.

The funding renewal will allow P&HCC to continue expanding these resources, ensuring that more students in Martinsville and surrounding communities can overcome barriers and achieve their educational goals.
