One person dead in Martinsville house fire




MARTINSVILLE, VA – Saturday at 7:51 PM, Martinsville Fire & MES responded to a 9-1-1 call at 24 Barton Street for a structure fire.


The call originated from a neighbor stating that he saw flames inside the home.


First arriving units found flames showing from the upper left bedroom area and attic of the home.


Firefighters began the fire attack while simultaneous searching the home.


During the search, a victim was located in the room where the initial flames were seen.


Unfortunately, the victim had already succumbed to the effects of the fire.


The victim has been sent to the medical examiner’s office for an official identification and cause of death.


“We would like to ask the community to share in our thoughts and prayers for the family during this tragic event” stated Martinsville Fire Chief Ted Anderson.


With assistance from a Martinsville Police Department investigator, the Martinsville Fire & EMS Fire Marshal’s office was on the scene until approximately 3:00 AM in search of a cause and origin of the fire.


The fire is still under investigation.
