HENRY COUNTY, VA – Virginia State Police says a street race in Henry County resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man.
Crews were dispatched to the scene of two crashes in the 2500 block of Greensboro Road at 1:44 a.m. Thursday.
According to state police, a 2006 Chevrolet and a 2009 Pontiac were racing, headed north, when the Pontiac ran off the right side of the road, hit a telephone pole and overturned several times.
Following that crash, police say the Chevrolet ran off the left side of the road, crossed the median, went through the southbound lanes, hit an embankment and overturned.
The two vehicles did not come in contact with each other, according to state police.
Police say the Pontiac was driven by 22-year-old Shamon Massey, of Martinsville, who died at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, 27-year-old Latoshia Hairston, of Martinsville, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
State police reports that both were wearing a seatbelt.
Hairston was charged with reckless driving, and additional charges are pending.
There were two passengers in the Chevrolet that fled the scene, police say.
The crash remains under investigation.
