FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA – A Martinsville woman died after a vehicle crashed and flipped over in Franklin County.

It happened on Route 220 just north of Fork Mountain Road at around 11:25 a.m. on Saturday.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2012 Toyota Camry was going north in the left lane of Route 220 when it crossed the center line and struck a 2016 Peterbilt tractor trailer that was traveling in the right lane.

State police say the impact of the crash caused the Toyota to run off the left side of the road, hit a culvert in the median and overturned.

74-year-old Betty Wade, of Martinsville, was driving the Toyota and was transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The passenger, 49-year-old Courtney Wade, of Martinsville, was ejected from the car and was taken to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, according to police.

Police say both were not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Peterbilt was not injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
