STUART, Va. — A man is dead following an early-morning structure fire Sunday in Patrick County, according to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the 911 Communication Center received a call at 3:01 a.m. reporting a house fire at 154 Memory Lane in Stuart. Several fire departments were dispatched and arrived on scene to battle the blaze.

Deputies confirmed that a male occupant was unable to escape and died inside the home.

“Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing the name of the victim until proper notification has been made,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement released Sunday morning.

Investigators from the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office are working alongside Virginia State Police fire investigators to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

Officials say that nothing at this stage appears malicious or suspicious.

The investigation remains ongoing.
