Nine Carlisle students receive AP Scholar Award, one receives National Scholar

AXTON – In May of this year, high school students from around the world took AP exams presented by The College Board.

Test results were recently announced in July.

The AP Program recognized high school students as AP Scholars who demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP exams.

AP awards and recognitions are academic distinctions that recipients can include on their résumé and college applications.

Nine of Carlisle School’s students received an AP Scholar Award this year, and of those winners, one student was recognized as a National AP Scholar.

Krutik Nigam, a Class of 2019 graduate who will attend University of Virginia this fall, earned the prestigious honor of National AP Scholar.

This award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of the exams.

Nigam took a total of 10 AP exams throughout his high school career.

Two students were named an AP Scholar with Distinction: Laura Painter, a Class of 2019 graduate, who will attend The College of William and Mary this fall, and Nigam.

This award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Yana Edelen, a Class of 2019 graduate who will attend UCLA this fall, was named an AP Scholar with Honor.

This award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.

The remaining six students received the AP Scholar Award which is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

These students include

  • Sean Arroyo

  • Andrew Chitwood

  • Lynden Gilstrap

  • Kelley Pickurel

  • Jacob Tisdale

  • Margaret Wright

Arroyo is a Class of 2019 graduate who will attend Virginia Tech this fall, and the other five students are all rising seniors at Carlisle School.

Statistics provided by The College Board, show that 88% of Carlisle students who took AP exams this year received a qualifying score.

This rate was an increase of 12% from the previous year and is above the national average.

“I am proud of the achievement of our students, and they are to be commended for a job well done. One must be well prepared to earn a qualifying score on these tests. The AP curriculum is rigorous, and our results are a testament to the excellence of the Carlisle education,” Gracie Agnew, Head of School stated.

Having the AP experience in high school gives students a taste of college-level work while developing the academic skills needed for college success.

Carlisle School was designated as an AP Capstone School for the 2019-2020 school year and is currently enrolling students.

Academic scholarships in math and science are available for new students in grades 6th - 12th, and parents can learn more about the scholarships by visiting carlisleschool.org/admissions/scholarships/.
