New and redesigned "Big Chair" installed in Uptown Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A new and redesigned "Big Chair" was installed in Uptown Martinsville on Tuesday.

For years, the Furniture Heritage Plaza on East Church Street was home to the original "Big Chair," built by Bassett Furniture to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The chair toured the country for about two years before being given to the City of Martinsville in 2009.

Due to unexpected issues, the chair was removed in 2013.

To address those issues, the new chair was made of steel instead of wood by PAC Custom Woodworking & CNC Routing.

The seat is made of fiberglass replicating the fabric on a Grove Park Mission chair, Bassett’s best-selling style at the time.

The Furniture Heritage Plaza was built to pay tribute to Martinsville and Henry County’s history and deep roots in the furniture industry.
