MARTINSVILLE, VA – A 72-year-old man died in Tuesday afternoon crash in Martinsville.

The crash occurred shortly after 12 p.m. in the 900 block of Rives Road.

A 2007 Toyota Camry was going north on Rives Road when it ran off of the right side of the road and struck a telephone pole, according to Martinsville Police.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was identified as David Kirk, of Martinsville.

Police said Kirk was wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The preliminary investigation suggests that neither speed nor alcohol contributed to this crash, but a medical event may have been the cause.

The Virginia State Police is providing assistance with the ongoing crash investigation.
