More details emerge on Martinsville New Year's deadly shooting

Updated: Jan 7, 2019

MARTINSVILLE – Tuesday, the Martinsville Police Department responded to 313 Clift Street for shots being fired. Arriving officers found 24-year-old Eden, North Carolina resident Rasheem Oshea Hairston dead at the scene. Court documents released Wednesday say Hairston was hit by a barrage of gunfire. Police were later called to SOVAH Health in Martinsville for a second person with gunshot wounds. Devontae Lee Massey had also been shot on Clift Street. Massey’s wounds were non-life threatening and he was later transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police say a New Year’s party was going on at the Clift Street home when the two men got into an argument. Court documents report that according to witnesses, Massey who “had an obvious problem with Hairston” became agitated.

At about 1:20 AM, Massey fired his gun from the street into the house. This led to an exchange in gunfire. Investigators say Massey fired shots, but they weren't sure if Hairston shot Massey. Police don’t know what the argument that led to the shooting was about.

Massey, 23 of Martinsville, is charged with:

  • second degree murder

  • use of a firearm in the commission of a felony

  • possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

  • reckless handling of a firearm

  • discharging a firearm in the city

Massey’s next court hearing has been set for March 22. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Martinsville Police.
