Martinsville girl wins national essay contest, trip to hunt a turkey in Kansas

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A Martinsville girl won a national essay contest, which landed her a trip to hunt a turkey in Kansas.

12-year-old Bethany Gilbert was named the 2020 National JAKES Essay Winner.

Gilbert traveled with her family to the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Convention in Nashville, Tennessee and received her award on February 14.

Janet Post, the executive director of the Kansas Governor’s One Shot Turkey Hunt, presented her with an invitation to the hunt.

Gilbert will hunt a turkey at the fully guided, private ground hunt in El Dorado, Kansas.

“Bethany is a capable 12-year-old, well-spoken and poised. She is ready to harvest a gobbler in Kansas,” Post said. “We can’t wait to have her at our event.”

Longtime hunt attendee Mark Elliott sponsors travel for the winner.

Sutherland’s Lumber Company provides head to toe Camouflage and NWTF awards the winner the stay in Nashville and a gun.
