Man arrested after one seriously injured in Martinsville shooting

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A man who was visiting a hospitalized relative in Roanoke was arrested and charged in connection with a Martinsville shooting.


The shooting happened on Dunlap Street Sunday at around 9:30 p.m.


The Martinsville Police Department said they found 39-year-old Johnny Omar Spencer Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound.


Spencer was taken to Sovah Health and was later transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial, where he is listed in serious condition.


According to police, 39-year-old Donte Cheron Freeman, of Preston Scales Drive in Martinsville, was arrested Wednesday in Roanoke by Carilion Health System Police when he went to the hospital to visit a relative on an unrelated issue.


He now faces the following felony charges:

  • Aggravated malicious wounding

  • Armed robbery

  • Using a firearm to commit aggravated malicious wounding

  • Using a firearm while committing an armed robbery

  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

  • Willfully discharging a firearm in a street resulting in bodily injury


Freeman is being held without bail in the Roanoke City Jail as he is currently on federal probation.

MARTINSVILLE, VA – A man is in the hospital after a Sunday night shooting in Martinsville.


The Martinsville Police Department responded to Dunlap Street at 9:36 p.m. and say they found 39-year-old Johnny Omar Spencer Jr., who had been shot.


The Martinsville man was transported to Sovah Health in Martinsville and was later transferred to Carilion Roanoke Memorial, where he is listed in serious condition at this time.


No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
