Man leads police on multi-county motorcycle pursuit, charged

PATRICK COUNTY, VA – A man was arrested Thursday after leading law enforcement on a chase.


A Virginia State Police trooper tried to stop a motorcyclist for going 81 miles per hour on Jeb Stuart Highway around 3:30 p.m.


According to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office, the motorcycle fled from the trooper and then the sheriff’s office entered the pursuit to assist at the intersection of Animal Clinic Road.


As the motorcycle continued to flee westbound, contractor crews were notified and they stopped all traffic in the construction zone going up the mountain.


The sheriff’s office said the pursuit continued up the mountain and into Carroll County where State Police lost sight of the motorcycle and terminated it.


The Carroll County Sheriff's Office was asked to assist and its deputies found the motorcycle on a dead end road off of U.S. 58.


Daniel Thomas Humphries, 29, of Burlington, NC, was arrested after he was found hiding in the woods a short distance away, according to authorities.


Humphries was charged by State Police with felony eluding a law enforcement officer, reckless driving - Speeding 20 or more MPH above the speed limit, and numerous other traffic violations.


He was released from the Patrick County Jail after posting a $5,000 bond.
